Cybersecurity investment management company Balance Theory has raised $19 million in a Series A financing round aimed at expanding its platform for enterprise security leaders. SYN Ventures led the round, which also included follow-on investments from DataTribe and TEDCO.

Based in Columbia, Maryland, Balance Theory develops software intended to help chief information security officers and their teams plan, evaluate and manage security-related spending. The platform combines information about an organization’s existing security program with market intelligence and automated workflows.

According to the company, its tools use artificial intelligence agents to support decisions involving procurement and security-technology portfolios. The system is designed to identify events that may require an investment decision, compare possible responses and help organizations assess whether existing purchases continue to deliver appropriate value.

The platform also maintains an auditable record of investment decisions, including the reasoning behind them. It tracks changes that could influence the relevance, cost-effectiveness or priority of particular products and services. Balance Theory said its technology currently oversees more than $1 billion in cybersecurity spending.

As part of the financing announcement, the company said Dan Burns will become executive chairman. Burns founded Accuvant and previously served as chief executive of Optiv, two major cybersecurity services firms.

Planned expansion

Balance Theory plans to use the new capital to increase its go-to-market activities, develop additional integrations with enterprise systems and broaden its cybersecurity market-data capabilities. The company also intends to continue expanding the AI agents and automated skills within its platform.

Chief executive and co-founder Greg Baker said security leaders have historically lacked a consistent method for understanding their own environments, evaluating an increasingly crowded technology market and translating analysis into purchasing decisions.

The company previously raised $3 million in seed funding in 2022. Balance Theory did not disclose its valuation after the Series A investment.
