The Cronos blockchain has resumed block production after an exploit involving the Tectonic decentralized lending platform reportedly enabled an attacker to borrow assets valued at about $74 million.
Available analyses indicate that the incident involved manipulation of the market price of Tectonic's TONIC token. The attacker allegedly drove the token's value sharply higher over a short period, then supplied the inflated holdings as collateral to obtain loans of other crypto assets.
Blockchain security firm PeckShield said that while the borrowing activity was valued at roughly $74 million, only about $6 million in Ethereum appeared to have been removed from the Cronos ecosystem. Much of the remaining value was reportedly unable to be transferred off the network.
Network rollback and restart
In response, Cronos halted transaction processing and later restored the chain to a state preceding the exploit. The network said the measure was an emergency action agreed upon through its validator consensus process and was intended to limit harm to users.
Cronos announced that block production restarted at block 90,896,189 on August 30, 2026, at 23:49 UTC. The project said it was monitoring the network for stability, application compatibility, and any remaining operational issues.
Such reversions are unusual in blockchain environments, where finalized transaction histories are generally intended to be difficult to alter. In this case, the response effectively removed transactions associated with the incident from the restored chain state.
Impact on Tectonic
Tectonic had previously been one of the largest lending applications on Cronos, with about $122 million in value locked before the attack, according to figures cited in reports. Data from DeFiLlama later showed the protocol's total value locked had fallen to less than $3 million.
The lending platform said it was investigating the event and advised users not to interact with its services until it confirms that operations are safe. Cronos has said it plans to publish a post-incident report with additional technical details.
Cronos is an Ethereum-compatible blockchain linked to Crypto.com. Tectonic allows users to deposit digital assets as collateral and borrow against them, a model that can be exposed to risk when token price feeds or on-chain liquidity can be manipulated.
